Unique suspended staircase for Southampton Hotel
The Brief
Triangle was briefed to design a bespoke steel suspended feature staircase to match its industrial theme.
The Challenge
The challenge was to design a suspended, all steel staircase following a curved route, with one access landing and one guest seating area. To achieve accuracy in design, a total station survey was incorporated into 3D CAD. The balustrading was designed for a loading of 3 kN. The risers were suspended from overhead steel cables. To achieve the industrial affect, solid durbar flooring and folded durbar steps were used.
The Result
The concept of an industrial staircase for a hotel may seem unusual, but the careful architectural lighting and décor, full length windows, and leading from a welcome entrance bar, is a surprising co-existence of modern and traditional that really works!
